Hi! I am a sophomore at Sully Buttes School in Onida, SD. Some activities I am involved in are girl's basketball, yearbook, and boy's basketball stats. I am in Ms. Stewart's Spanish II class.

Cervantes Man of La Mancha

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

1564-1616

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra is considered one of the greatest figures of both Spanish and world literature. Cervantes received little formal education and early on in life he got a job in a cardinal's home in Rome. Later, he was a soldier and got wounded in the Battle of Lepanto, leaving his hand permanently crippled.

Cervantes sailed for Spain, captured by pirates, sold into slavery, and five years later was ransomed. He then got married and worked as a tax collector. He got into trouble over illegal seizures of property and irregularities in his account and ended up in jail.

In 1602, he began writing the story of Don Quixote, which had been in the back of his mind. Don Quixote is a picaresque novel, a biography of a wandering rogue who undertakes a series of adventures. It was written to mock popular novels of chivalry which glorified the ideals of courtesy, constancy, bravery, and loyalty.

I admire Cervantes for being so brave and adventurous just like the novel character, Don Quixote, he created. Cervantes was a soldier, sailor, tax collector, and writer. He was wounded in battle, captured by pirates, sold into slavery, and ended up in jail. He led a very exciting life. Cervantes died in Madrid in 1616, the same year as Shakespeare.
